Gary Snyder Fine Art MT
at ExpoChicago 2023
Gary Snyder Fine Art MT returns to ExpoChicago with a booth titled Discovery and Rediscovery, reflecting his 40 years of championing more historically rooted and under-recognized artists alongside Montana based artist Ben Miller. Following last year’s presentation in EXPO’s Profile section, Ben Miller will once again cast his fly rod, this year to capture the rhythms and textures of Lake Michigan. Miller will be stationed on the Navy Pier April 11 and 12 prior to EXPO Chicago’s opening on Thursday, April 13. Proceeds from the sale of the painting will benefit NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Counsel).
The five artists in the ReDiscovery section – Thomas Downing, Peter Pinchbeck, Ralph Rosenborg, Janet Sobel, and Vivian Springford – all died in relative art world obscurity. Only Pinchbeck received a New York Times obituary upon his death in 2000 (Janet Sobel, who died in 1968, received a Times Overlooked No More obituary in 2021.) Through careful nurturing of these under-recognized artists, Snyder has sought to reclaim their rightful historic stature.

Endangered Rivers Project
Endangered Rivers Project, a collaboration between Ben Miller and (Not)Gagosian, creates a new visual language, and expands the possibilities of environmental representation in art. Ben Miller, a Montana based painter best known for his Endangered Rivers series, creates work that is both abstract and allegiant to the real world, rooted in the environmental conditions under which he creates each piece. This digital collaboration with (Not)Gagosian allows for an evolution of the work, furthering the concepts and process behind his original paintings.

PROGRAM – JERSEY CITY
Sep. 10–13, 2022
Mana Contemporary is pleased to sponsor the creation of Endangered Rivers paintings by Montana-based artist Ben Miller from September 10 through September 13, 2022. This will be the first of this series in the Northeast United States.
Ben Miller is a highly recognized Montana-based painter best known for his Endangered Rivers series. He is represented by Gary Snyder Fine Art, an authority in modern American art.
Six years ago, Ben Miller began his Endangered Rivers series out of his deep passion for raising the awareness and importance of river preservation. The Endangered Rivers paintings, like the rivers themselves, are complex layers of color and transparency. Each work is created in reverse, with marks made on the back of a plexiglass panel. When turned around, the first strikes of paint represent surface reflections and whitewater rills. These highlights are then backed by successive color layers of deeper and darker forms.
The Rhythms of the River, directed by Manabu Inada follows artist Ben Miller as he travels through the endangered rivers of Colorado and Montana. You can watch it on his website.
All works will be available for purchase. A portion of the sales will support local organizations dedicated to highlighting the importance of river and land preservation, including: Liberty Science Center, Friends of Lincoln Park, Hackensack Riverkeeper and Friends of Liberty State Park.
We welcome you to join us September 10th – September 13th in various locations throughout Jersey City to watch Ben create new works for the Endangered Rivers series.
Events at the Parks and at Mana Contemporary are free and open to the public.

Fly Cast Paintings by Ben Miller at the Story Mill Pop-Up Gallery, in Bozeman, Montana will be open to the public Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 1 - 7PM.
Gary Snyder Fine Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Bozeman artist Ben Miller at the Story Mill Pop-Up Gallery in Bozeman, Montana. Ben has developed a unique style of painting that he calls “Fly Cast Painting”. The nineteen paintings in this exhibition take as subject matter the rivers of Colorado and Montana.
Ben Miller celebrates, and intimately paints, rivers, the lifeblood of our land. His paintings present the natural world as a place of pilgrimage, discovery, inspiration, beauty and worship.
Without witnessing Ben paint a painting, it is almost impossible to understand how they are made. He starts by setting up a homemade easel on the banks of a river, upon which he places a sheet of transparent plexiglass. Using traditional fly fishing rods, Ben substitutes handmade “fly-brushes” for conventional hooked flies, saturates them in acrylic paint, and casts from over twenty feet on to the plexiglass. Over the course of a day, he casts over one thousand times, the mark of each cast eventually making up a finished painting of a chosen river.
